Billions of non-biodegradable plastic water bottles end up in landfills each year, and millions of people die from drinking contaminated water. Unicorn's "Water for Change" aims to combat both these issues. The product is packed in recyclable Tetra Prisma® carton, and for every "Water for Change" purchased, 10 litres of water is donated to a village in the developing world. This unique approach makes the design stand out from other water packaging solutions.
The packaging is made mainly from paper, a renewable source, and the wood used for the paper comes from FSC-forests. This means that all trees that are cut are also planted back. The bottle's shape and size make them efficient to ship, further reducing pollution. These design choices reflect Unicorn's commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
The project, which started in February 2016 and finished in May 2016 in Riga, was led by Art Director Evelīna Ginzburga and Graphic Designer Viktorija Černišova. Their creative challenge was not only to create a positive, modern, Scandinavian design, but to make it informative and educative. The result is a product that is as aesthetically pleasing as it is impactful.
Unicorn's "Water for Change" has been recognized for its innovative design and positive impact. It was awarded the Golden A' Packaging Design Award in 2017, a prestigious accolade granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. The award celebrates products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
Unicorn's "Water for Change" is more than a water bottle - it's a testament to the power of design to effect positive change. By combining sustainability and philanthropy, Unicorn has created a product that not only quenches thirst but also contributes to a better world.
